Heroes and Role Models: John Lewis
What state are you from? South Carolina
Is there something few people know about you or that others would be surprised to learn about you? I like to spend time exploring the United States in an Airstream travel trailer.
If you could have one superpower what would it be? Invisibility
What piece of advice would you share with fundraisers? "Early is on time." I received this advice after being late to meet with one of our donors. She indicated that her time is precious and important to her. She reiterated that being (early or on time) demonstrates how much you value the other person's time. This really resonated with me. I try to arrive early to donor meetings. I also think it conveys a message of enthusiasm and excitement.
What has been your favorite AFP DC event and why? The Sunset Social is my favorite event because it has the largest attendance and is geared towards welcoming new potential members.
How did AFP help you learn and grow in your career? As an early-career professional AFP introduced me to mentors and coaches who helped me understand effective fundraising practices and build my confidence. As a mid-career professional AFP connected me with others in the field to help identify, recruit, and hire my teams. It also offered trainings and networking events to ensure my fundraising program was adapting to trends and implementing the best strategies. Today, AFP continues to help me learn and grow through its education sessions, professional networking, and meaningful friendships. I have been a member for 18 years and not only have I developed a cadre of fundraising experts from diverse backgrounds and organizations, but I have also made lifelong friendships.
Why did you get involved with the AFP DC board? I joined the AFP DC board because I believe in the impact it makes for its individual members and the fundraising profession more broadly. I want to contribute my skills and experience alongside others in the field who are committed to the mission of practicing ethical fundraising through professional education, networking, research, and advocacy.
